FreeBSD

In my not so humble opinion, especially since I am not a BIG fan of non-commercial GUI's, FreeBSD kicks Linux's butt to the curb. It is easier to configure (in console mode anyway).

I (Mad Hacker) have started using FreeBSD for my evil experiments and projects. Up until recently, I was using Linux because FreeBSD lacked decent Java support. You might like to see my rant about OSX.

As a general rule, for servers, I will use FreeBSD where I can and Linux where I have to.

For the moment, I cannot afford a Mac, but when I do, I will take a similar stance on clients. I will use OSX where I can and Windows where I have to.

UPDATE: FreeBSD Now has OFFICIAL SUN JAVA SUPPORT:

I have UPGRADED (that's right, I said UPGRADED) my FC4 server to FreeBSD 6.1. Getting sound and the nVidia drivers working was actually easier than it was in FC4. It's amazing how much faster it runs too. The FreeBSD box has taken over handling most of my home automation tasks. It has a few more services to take over from my aging Linux box. The aging Linux box will eventually become a FC6 or CentOS box.
