Tango Uniform - what is that?

Tango Uniform is Military slang. It's the International Radio Operators Phonetic Alphabet representation of T.U.. What's T.U.? It's the abbreviation for "Toes Up", or the more crass "Tits Up". Meaning something is messed up, destroyed or broken, knocked over on it's back etc. Some people unfamiliar with the DoD world will never quite "get it"... It's really not intended to be vulgar.

I find this website offensive, what should I do?

LOG OFF... Close your Browser and LOG OFF!!!! I am only politically correct at work, where I am paid to be. Political correctness is the way all of these tiny special interest groups are gaining control. It is also the belief that you can pick up a turd by the clean end. While I am not really out to offend people, there will be no political correctness on this site. PERIOD. People do not have the right to not be offended. LOG OFF and GROW UP!!!!!

Why do you have a picture of the devil on your website?

That is not a picture of the devil. It's Beastie - the mascott of FreeBSD. While I'm introducing them, the penguin is Tux, the Linux mascott. The guy with the pointy head is Duke, the Java mascott. I swiped that image from the internet and cropped it a bit. I plan on replacing it with one of my own but haven't had time. Basically, they represent the 3 main software technologies talked about on this site. You've got bigger problems if you think the devil is a cartoon character. If you are the owner of that image and can prove it, and would like it removed, please contact me and I will remove it ASAP. I would be interested in buying rights to it if you aren't too greedy as well.

I hear this website is run by a hacker. Is that true?

Yes, however with the true definition of the word hacker:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/H/hacker.html

This website does not endorse the definition or the activities that the media associates with the word hacker. When the media says "hacker", they mean "cracker". See this definition:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/C/cracker.html

I do not endorse cracking into systems/networks you do not own. Why would you want to use someone else's computer in the first place? I HATE other people's computers.

Knowledge about cracking can be good though - help you protect yourself better. I HIGHLY recommend running tools line nmap or Wire Shark/Ethereal (why didn't they call it LAN Shark? "Candy Gram") on YOUR OWN network and see what's happening. It's good education. Install a copy of windows on a machine you can dork up. Have someone change the Administrator login password to something you don't know and try and break in. It's scary how easy it is. Anyone with the right CD and physical access to your machine can become Administrator in 2 reboots. Google for it.

Before you Linux Zipper Heads laugh too hard, have you set a bootloader password on your Linux Machine? You can become root on any Linux box you have physical access to WITHOUT EVEN HAVING A SPECIAL CD (one of the rare places where Windows is more secure than Linux - there, I said it!!!!!). Everything you need is right there - 2 reboots and you're root! Go ahead - Google for it, then stop laughing. Better yet, Google for it, TRY IT and then stop laughing (until you set a bootloader password).

Network Access is also something good to know about. Breaking OUT of a network is sometimes a good place to start. For example, your company blocks using chat software on their network. There are ways to run it anyway, virtually undetected if you know what you are doing. Be warned, however, this MIGHT get you reprimanded or even fired if you are discovered. Play around with some things and educate yourself. Can you access your home network from your work network? What does Shields UP at grc.com say about your home network?

Quoting from the Jargon File, so... You're a follower of ESR?

No, I am not. While I think Eric S. Raymond (ESR) is a good guy, he does not necessarily speak for me. We have some things in common, and have even exchanged emails. I enjoy a lot of his humor and technical writings and use at least one of his utilities. I also own an actual copy of The New Hacker's Dictionary. Apart from software, and some of his humor, ESR and I disagree on a number of things. He has some far-out ideas. I also do not endorse his "Hacker Emblem". REAL Hackers (of which ESR is definitely a member) can quickly identify each other by their technical abilities... The "Hacker Emblem" makes it too easy for posers to falsely identify themselves.

Why do you call yourself The Mad Hacker?

It's a nickname/title given to be by some of my co-workers. I actually have an offical award from my company that calls me that. I liked the handle and decided to keep it. I am sure there are other Mad Hackers on the net just as there are other uses of Tango Uniform. The combination of the two helps identify me ;-)

Are you angry?

No... It's kind of a play on The Mad Hatter. More loony-mad than angry-mad. I do get angry sometimes, like most people do. I'd much rather laugh though. I do have a very sarchastic sense of humor. People sometimes mistake that for anger - it's not.

Why this website?

I am constantly working on short-burn home projects to keep my sanity. Over the years, even though my projects are short, they get more and more complex. I am constantly telling people what I am doing and how I did it. I decided to start a website to document some of my projects. Some of them, like switching to OpenWRT have drawn a lot of attention from people I know in real life. I figure, why not try and make a few bucks too? Any money I make from this site will, of course, be poured back into my projects and help make the site better. It's a win-win situation.

Why are you bad-mouthing GNU/GPL?

I'm not... I believe in using the right tool for the job. Software Licenses are a tool like everything else. You need to pick the right tool for the job, both when looking for Open Source Software and when releasing Open Source Software. With any license, you have to be careful. With GPL, for example, it CAN be a CANCER that creeps into code. GPL Licensed Software CAN be the right tool. There is also a BIG difference between GPL and LGPL that many people do not understand. Some aspects of GPL are scary, like some of the things I've read about the upcoming GPL 3.0. Some tactics are also scary, like the agreement for gcj - I think those folks ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Will you help me do [something]?

Other than the info already on this site, probably not. You can always politely email me and if your problem is interesting enough and you ask politely enough, then maybe I will reply. If I know you in real-life, maybe as well...

Why are you bad-mouthing Microsoft and their products?

Hello? Is anyone listening? Microsoft is a bully and their products are good enough for the average person who does not know any better. PERIOD. Microsoft software is full of security holes. I USE MICROSOFT WINDOWS. I do not like that fact. Due to the nature of my employment, however, I will probably ALWAYS be stuck using Microsoft products in some form or another. For Pete's Sake, CERT, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security has been urging people to not use Microsoft Internet Explorer. What browser are you using to view this very site? Don't make me start pounding my fist on the table. As long as the general public continues to act like sheep and follow Microsoft, we will all be doomed to this. Name another company who makes products that allow you to get viruses from a Word Processor or Spreadsheet. It's TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! I can hear some of you thinking (BAAAAH!!! BAAAH!!!) "Vista Will Save Us!!!!!" Think again doofus!!!!

Why didn't you buy an iPhone instead of a Blackberry?

I wanted something that actually worked and that you could develop applications for in Java.
